Three Apples is a simple composition in a painterly style. Robert Henri, one of my favorite “painterly” artists, grew up in the frontier Nebraska town founded by his father, John J. Cozad in 1871. Once named Cozaddale, it is now just Cozad. Standing on the 100th meridian, which was the end of the line at the time for the railroad, you’ll find a Robert Henri Museum. How his name changed from Cozad to Henri is a harrowing tale to live through, but good for the telling.
