My decision to use a limited palette on this painting led me to use a couple of black and white photographs. They are of people I admire; my father as a handsome young sailor and the opera singer, Leontyne Price. She was born in 1928 in the segregated south and achieved international success in her career. The sailor was a young man born fourth of 10 children in rural Missouri. He taught his own children patient observation, culinary curiosity, self confidence and so much more. The war? It must have been hell on earth, for he would never talk about it.
