- Pencil on paper
The Barred Tiger Salamander was a drawing exercise beginning with hard (5H) pencils and moving to the softest (9B). The values darken as the pencil softens and the image grows more three dimensional.
In 1994 the State of Kansas named the Barred Tiger Salamander as the state amphibian. Up to 14″ long and found in the wild from Canada to northern Mexico, they eat insects, slugs and earthworms. Their environment should be damp so soil is easily burrowed. As adults they live on land, but in their juvenile larval stage they are entirely aquatic.
Nature had a program on salamanders last Wednesday. They are fascinating.
