Ann lives along the Rio Grande River of New Mexico, where, among other things, she raises a few chickens. Their chicken house is classy having a saloon door. Ann is a wonderful storyteller and a story maker. I painted this smart and funny woman in her home environment, near the river’s irrigation ditch, with the hills and mountains of NM behind her. Chickens represent her glorious domestic side. The coyote represents her sense of adventure. Once sleeping under the Mojave Desert night sky deep in an arroyo a pack of coyotes set her hammock bed swinging as they ran under her. In the painting a coyote stands like a bush in the desert background. The 6 figures holding hands in the rug represent good friends who are too rarely together, but make easy companions when they are.
This painting emulates the style of southwest painter, TC Cannon, with a nod to Georgia O’Keefe.
