Hugging the baby

The stripes on the child and mother were too fun not to draw. Life is always a mystery, but when you’re 3 years old the mystery is mixed with magic. Mom’s swollen belly foretells a future event. Forewarned, but how can a big sister ever be prepared, thus the pensive and possessive look on her face.

Dan and Charlie

The Lawrence Humane Society will be holding its annual fundraiser on Friday, September 30th. This is the drawing I’m contributing to the auction. Family members, Dan and Charlie, are the subjects.

Hard Candy

Hard Candy

Trash trolling is an admirable hobby. When college student depart the city where I live, the things that can be rescued from the trash boggle the mind. I know veteran dumpster divers, and I don’t deserve the title. However, this collection of glass candies sparkled from a pile near the curb, catching my eye as I stepped from my parked car. They’re mine now, along with the pressed glass bowl they were sitting in. They’re pretty.

MAXX

The times when the tooth fairy is making regular visits is brief. I had to capture Maxx’ gap tooth grin. We’re teasing him that he looks like the KU basketball player, Cole Aldrich. The medium of scratchboard is fun and relatively fast.

Hedge Apple on Scratchboard

Hedge Apple

  • Scratchboard and Ink
  • 7″ x 5″
  • $350

Last fall Hedge Apples littered the forest path where I was walking. In the past I’ve gathered them to store in the corner of a shed to discourage mice. It didn’t work. Now I gather them to study their pattern. And just as Dr. Seuss’ Horton heard a “Who”, I expect to hear them too. The hedge ball or apple becomes a world unto itself floating in space.

Buckwheat II

Buckwheat

  • Scratchboard and Ink
  • 10″ x 8″
  • In a private collection

I did a cartoon scratchboard of Buckwheat for the Human Society Auction. It was posted on this blog in July, 2009. This drawing shows a more refined line pattern, but it’s still a bad hair day for Buckwheat.
